Activision Blizzard has bought MLG

Activision Blizzard has acquired Major League Gaming for approximately 46 million dollars. This is not a shock, because a couple of weeks ago Activision has launched its e-sports division, so this move is just part of the plan to create the Activision Blizzard e-sports broadcast network.

Moreover, this acquisition is also a recognition of the growing importance of e-sports, which is a good thing for those who are willing to become spectators of professional gamers who are competing for large prize pools in tournaments. More important, e-sports could become a 456 million dollars industry in 2017.

Probably, this is not a shocking news, because during the years, the e-sports business has grown and it is still growing rapidly, while Activision Blizzard's move is just a confirmation.

So, yes, Activision Blizzard has bought MLG, while 31 million dollars were paid in cash and approximately 15 million dollars are subject to further conditions.

If we go back in time, in October more specifically, we discover that Activision Blizzard started a new e-sports media networks division, where they have also hired former MLG president Mike Sepso as senior vice president.

So, with this acquisition, Mike Sepso will have the chance to reunite with his former colleagues.

“It was great to be able to walk aback into the office and announce this to the staff,” has declared Mike Sepso.

We are really at an interesting inflection point for e-sports as a mainstream activity. Having the combined resources of Activision Blizzard and MLG is a tremendous opportunity for us to move the whole industry forward,” he continued.

Moreover, he also released a statement to talk about this big acquisition. “Activision Blizzard’s e-sports leadership, incredible intellectual property and long history in competitive gaming create a perfect home for MLG’s capabilities,” Mike said.
The acquisition of MLG’s business is an important step towards Activision Blizzard Media Networks’ broader mission to bring e-sports into the mainstream by creating and broadcasting premium e-sports content, organizing global league play and expanding distribution with key gaming partners,” he explained.
“Sundance and I founded MLG to highlight the incredible talent of competitive gamers all over the world,” Mike Sepso went on to add. MLG was founded 12 years ago, being recognized as an early mover in e-sports.

MLG Pro Circuit was also known to be the longest-running e-sports league in North America. So, Activision Blizzard is hoping to go further into the growing professional gaming business, which they have declared that currently has 100 million unique viewers globally.
Our acquisition of Major League Gaming’s business furthers our plans to create the ESPN of e-sports,” has declared Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.
MLG’s ability to create premium content and its proven broadcast technology platform –- including its live streaming capabilities -– strengthens our strategic position in competitive gaming,” Bobby explained.
MLG has an incredibly strong and seasoned team and a thriving community. Together, we will create new ways to celebrate players and their unique skills, dedication and commitment to gaming. We are excited to add Sundance and the entire MLG esports team to our competitive gaming initiatives,” he concluded.
