When I connected the drive to my Windows 7 computer, Windows 7 would not recognize it. So I called tech support, and of course a guy from a foreign country, who I could barely understand, and had to ask him numerous times to repeat what he was saying very slowly over and over again, I finally understood him to explain that "sometimes Windows 7 has a problem", as the drive is formatted for Windows 10, and the drive format is different for Windows 7. He suggested to hook it up to a Windows 10 machine, which my laptop is, and low and behold, it took off working on the Windows 10 machine. Then I took the drive back to my Windows 7 machine, and it started working. WEIRD !So, all in all, it works, but not without wasting about 2 hours trying to make it work. They could do better.

Overall I like Seagates external hard drives. Even though this is my 3rd one in 3 years... The storage capacity, and portability are their biggest pros. However there could be a lot done to the device to make it better. First off you have to be very careful when handling this device, one drop, or it hitting something in your bag during transport, can, and more than likely will cause irreparable damage. I have gone through three because of this. The first one dropped less than a foot, hit the carpet, and quit working. The second one hit my laptop while I was driving home, and quit working. The third one I didn’t drop at all, and it randomly quit after 5 months. Luckily they’re good about their warranties, even though the application on the website is a humongous pain in the ass. I had to restart it over 5 different times because it would randomly take me back to the home page, and you couldn’t read or click on half of the parts. Needless to say after 3 hours of trying, I stopped and contacted them over the phone. The person who helped me was extremely nice, and apologized about the technical issues on the site. The second thing they could work on to make it better would be to work on the heat issue, this device gets extremely hot after using it for hours. Lastly they could make, or purchase a better usb2.0/3.0 cord; the ones they give you are absolute crap. They last for a few months, 6 at most before they stop working. My guess is it’s a cheap product purchased in bulk. If Seagate would take the time to fix these issues, I believe they would have the best EHDs on the market. Only because of the portability, storage capacity, and customer service do I give this product 3 stars. Without those three things, I’d advise people not to buy them. However I do warn people to proceed with caution, and be extremely careful when using one.

I bought one of these a couple weeks ago for my thousand-dollar Android cell phone and upon plugging it in the device was corrupted. I figured it was just a fluke so I sent it back and got a new one, plugged it into my Android phone, and it corrupted again. I received a third replacement and this time tried it with my 2017 iPad Pro using the Apple supported dongle for plugging in USB external hard drives, and it absolutely would not read a write any information to my iPad, it said there was not enough storage capacity, which led me to believe it was all so corrupted, but the odd part is it worked fine with my desktop computer. Maybe they started using cheaper supplies during covid-19 but right now they will absolutely not work with my mobile devices. So I've been through three of these and none of them have worked for me, I'm going to try a Western digital hard drive now.

When you need a portable external storage device, and want to get the best quality for your money, this is an excellent hard drive to get. I have had excellent experience with a variety of Western Digital storage products over the years. This drive is formatted NTFS, it hooks in right out of the box and is ready to go on a windows system. It is USB 3.0, so it is relatively fast (see more below). The cable is completely detachable so it is easy to replace if damaged. There is a nice dim LED where the cable connects to tell when the drive is powered and is being accessed. This is a small format hard drive so the storage device is tiny compared to the hard drives of the olden days. This makes this much easier to move around. It is important to understand that this is a hard drive (physical spinning parts) versus an SSD (solid state electronics). The SSD will be significantly faster for reading and faster for writing operations. See two images I have attached to this review for benchmarks of the My Passport 1tb hard drive versus a My Passport 500gb SSD. Speed comes at a price, as of Oct 10, 2019 the cost of a 1tb SSD is $170ish versus $60ish for a 1tb hard drive, both from Western Digital. You want speed, you pay for it.A property to be aware of for those not fully understanding the differences hard drive and SSD.. is that with a hard drive versus an SSD, the hard drive and its spinning parts is more susceptible to physical blows, jars, or drops than an SSD, though neither are completely immune to damage. Even though this case feels very well built and secure, I’d be gentle with this product.Overall, this is one heck of a nice portable hard drive in a tiny format for an affordable price. If you will be doing a lot of large file transfers, consider an SSD product instead.

I bought two of these 5 tb My Passport external drives to replace older external drives that were long in the tooth and I was afraid would start to fail. I use these back to up all of my photo reference from over my lifetime, so it's very important that they work. After 4 months, one of the new ones stopped working, boom. I got in contact with Western Digital and after I did all the return paperwork, sent it back to them and got a new one shipped to me within 2 weeks of them receiving the defective drive. Do I wish the first hadn't failed? Of course. But once it did, the next best thing is to know that the company will step up and do the right thing. So, if you decide to buy one of these 5tb external drives rest easy knowing you're protected against loss during the warranty period. But, make sure you take a few moments to go to their website and register your drive. You'll be glad you did!

I have 5 of the 5TB models syncing about 3-4TB of data each and EVERY NIGHT for over a year now and I haven't had ANY issues with ANY of them. I also have 6 more of the 4TB model that are over 3 years old and I haven't had any issues with those either. I don't know what some of you guys are doing to your external drives, I know they're portable, but they're not meant to be repeatedly dropped on the floor or thrown across a room in a backpack. And for those of you that are complaining and giving bad reviews because the drive space is "not right" on your 'puter...Hard drive manufacturers count the actual number of bytes of the drive to determine drive capacity:2,000,000,000,000 bytes = 2TBPCs calculate in BINARY...4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096...these numbers should look somewhat familiar to you. Since 1,024 is the closest binary to 1,000 that's what PCs have to use to calculate drive capacity.1 kb = 1024 bytes1 MB = 1024 kb1 GB = 1024 MB1 TB = 1024 GBAfter you break down the math and format the hard drive, the drive capacity on PCs/MACs comes pretty close to this:Manufacturer / PC500GB / 465GB1TB / 931GB2TB / 1.81TB4TB / 3.63TB5TB / 4.65TBNeither the PC nor the hard drive manufacturer is really "right" or "wrong" when it comes to this, it's just the way it is. If hard drive manufacturers want to adjust the way they calculate the capacity of their drives to account for the PC calculating in binary, or change the way they manufacture the drive so it "comes out evenly" that's completely up to them. But it would be incredibly expensive to do so and the price of hard drives would easily double or triple. Technically the drive byte count is what the manufacturer states, it's how the PC itself operates and calculates drive capacity that throws it all off. It's been this way for literally 50+ years now, seriously, it's nothing new, get over it. It's like hot dogs coming in a 10-pack and hot dog buns coming in an 8-pack, no one has fixed that dilemma yet either. Complaining about drive capacity being short does nothing more than show how much of a n00b you are and how little you know about PCs.

Great value for our two xboxes however very disappointed that the two month game pass had been expired for quite some time and wanting to receive the game pass trial was one of the main reasons I chose to purchase this item. Having said that the Overall product is good.

The WD_BLACK P10 is marketed as a game drive and finding **actual** specs on this was tough so I rolled the dice and bought this one. It's a good portable drive and 2TB stores a ton of games but...This is a 5400rpm drive - so playing games directly will have extremely long load times even at peak speed. Once a load is done and you're playing there's no performance issues, but heavy games will take a bit to load. I can boot up Assassin's Creed Odyssey then make a sandwich and come back before I'm ready to play. This is a great drive for games and media STORAGE, but not as a live disk to play games from. For that look at the WD_BLACK P50 line, which are external SSD's. I'm reassigning this drive from my PS4 to my work bag, and replacing it with an SSD.Seagate does the same thing - selling 5400rpm drives as "game drives" when what it's good for can be accomplished with a cheaper "non gaming" external hard drive. Being a career technologist for 20 years, I find that irresponsible.

This is a good hard drive to purchase for the price and the number of games you can store is great. It also prevents me from deleting my old games. The only issue I had with this is hard drive was the initial setup of the hard drive it was just not plugged and play with little directions.

Bulky yet compact. Large storage space and confusion with formatting it prior to use. Multiple formatting options... if you don’t select the right one forn MAC iOS systems, your computer or laptop will not be able to detect the driver. Website is difficult to navigate. Guess I’ll see how long it lasts with time. No problems so far but thank goodness I had a friend who was able to help me get it up and running!

I purchased these hard drives before a Safari in East Africa last year since I knew I would not be able to sync the large quantities of image data to the cloud given my internet situation. On that trip, these drives worked great, and are actually pocket-able if you are like me and feel paranoid leaving all of your image data in a tent or lodge. I took the same hard drives with me to the Faroe Islands this year, having never used them since last years trip, and they failed one after the other. The first one failed by giving me an indicator light and making sound, but not showing up in windows as a USB device and never completely spinning up. I wrapped it in gaffers tape to make sure I did not accidentally waste time trying to use it again until I got back to the states to investigate, then the next drive failed a few days later. Luckily, I had internet access and a tablet with a large SSD I was able to convert to an in field storage device. These may work well on a trip that is quite mundane as far as ruggedness is concerned, but otherwise perform exactly as you would expect a spinning mechanical drive to work after it has been a carry on a couple of times.

These drives are inexpensive and perform well but the USB connector on the drive side is very flimsy and can fall out easily. Don’t plan to use these on your lap or on the move. They need to sit on a flat surface because if you move them too much the connector will fall out.

I have the 10TB drive connected to an Xbox One X. Read/write speeds are fine (its 5400 rpm) and it works just as advertised. Build quality is only okay, the drive housing is a thin piano black plastic. One big caveat: this drive is VERY loud. The disk spinning and being accessed is very audible, especially during quiet scenes in games, movies, and TV and I sit about 7 feet away from it where it is inside my home theater console. I could not imagine how loud it would be sitting right next to it plugged into my computer. This is replacing a Seagate 8TB drive which is very quiet in comparison. So it’s a great drive, great storage capacity, good read/write speeds but it’s extremely loud.EDIT 7/16/2021: the drive still works fine with my Xbox One X but it has now developed a loud pronounced buzzing sound. It was already loud out of the box but now 1.5 years later, it buzzes where I can hear it if I don’t turn up game, movie, or TV audio to cover it. One star off. I’ve had Seagate drives that had no issues so buy one of those instead.

If you're just after the physical drive inside the plastic casing, removing it is easy enough, but some drives may require you to cover up some pins on the SATA power delivery. Otherwise, they won't show up in your system or BIOS. This might not be the case with every single drive, so your mileage may vary, but before assuming your device was dead on arrival, or that you killed it, look up some videos on your device. There might be a simple fix out there. Hope this helps.

This drive has decent speed, run cool and does not encrypt the data. However, Elements drives do not work with WD Drive utilities as do Passports, Mybook and even Easy Store, which is Best Buy's custom model. You cannot set or disable the sleep timer and I find this incredibly stupid as I bought this drive for a full time daily storage system and. Now every time I go to access my data I have a 15 second delay and it's damn annoying. If I was using it for a once a day back up, then the 15 seconds wouldn't be an issue. But as a full time data disk it's just not suitable. More and more people are using external drives for their laptops, and other small form factor computers that haven't room in the case for a 12T drive. So we need a non encrypted, full time on storage system. My Book allows for sleep settings but the encryption, which cannot be disabled, adds data transfer delays and overall speed loss. Plus, if the drive control should fail, you cannot remove the drive and plug it into another interface as the encryption prevents reading the data. Think on this before purchasing the Elements drive series.

Had this drive for about 9 months before the USB-C port on the actual drive became unusable... I wasn't overly rough with it at all. I used it at a desk almost exclusively and disconnected it properly every day when I went home from work. At a certain point, the USB-C port located on the hard drive became damaged from everyday use. I tried 5 different cables but nothing. LUCKILY, I had the rescue care from LaCie and was able to recover my data. It took about a month, but I have everything back so I can speak positively of their customer service. If you use this drive, back up the data to another drive. Seriously, this was a pain in the ass to deal with. As a drive in and of itself, it's very durable and extremely fast BUT it's useless if you can't connect it to a computer. If I had to go it again, I'd go with another hard drive.

I’ve had great experience overall with Lacie products - but with this drive, occasionally I will get a message from my computer that it was unplugged without being ejected, this is while it’s still plugged in. Could be a problem with the cord or my USBC port though. Overall happy.

It requires that you run the built-in Lacie Setup utility, which is included on the only visible, 400-Megabyte drive partition. It will automatically register the drive online and offer additional paid services. After that, however, you're free to wipe and partition the drive however you see fit. One star deducted for forcing this additional step.

This guy works like it's intended. I've had it for about 2 months now and it still works perfectly. Don't buy the PS4 licensed version (2TB), spend a couple more dollars and get the regular 4TB. There is little noise, no clicking and formatting was super easy in my PS4. I use it to play my PS4 games in my PS5 and it works perfect on both consoles. PS5 recognizes it without any issue. Be warned, PS5 games are not playable in any external storage device yet (Apr 2021). Any external storage you buy, regardless of OEM, will only work for bringing over PS4 games into your PS5, not for the new generation themselves. Will definitely buy again if needed.

Recently I picked up a PS4 Pro and quickly was filling up the console storage.Decided to look at a few different external portable HDD.Felt that the 2TB drive would meet my storage demands. This drive was Official Licensed for Playstation.Normally that means a slightly higher price point, but this was a great deal.Connected the drive with the provided cable to my PS4 Pro and formatted the drive.Moved my downloaded games over to the new drive.Took a good day, but was well worth it.My PS4 Pro now has space on the original drive. The new drive has my currently downloaded games and games I'm currently playing. No noise or heat issues. The drive works perfectly with the PS4 Pro.The front has the PS logo and Seagate is molded into the front as a big S.This is again the portable drive (no power cord needed) gets power from the provided cable and the PS4.See photos. This drive also has a 3 year warranty, nice.Hope this was helpful.

It’s an affordable but good external storage option to use on PS5 and I love it. The storage capacity is as advertised and the downloading speed is slightly slower than the actual console (that’s why it got 4/5 stars) but it’s still pretty rapid. I queued about 12 games to download to it last night and put my PS5 on test mode and they were all downloaded by the time I woke up so yes you can use rest mode during storage downloads as well. I haven’t come across any lags or long loading times when playing the games directly from the external storage drive either. Overall I’m not disappointed at all and the price of it was the best part considering most good external game storage hardrives cost over $100 so I’ve been recommending this to all my gamers who don’t want to spend that much on storage.

I have tried multiple times to perform a system backup, but Windows 10 will not work with this drive.

I ordered this product last night and it was delivered this morning! Just in the nick of time. My google drive has been full for the first time since opening my account and I have been unable to receive email for about a week! Moved all my files so quick I was surprised! Now to see if it works on the PS4.

I have a macbook 2013. I was worried this wouldn't work for me but the reviews helped me make my decision. It does have to be formatted after you connect it to the computer.Go to Finder, applications, utilities, disk utility, select the toshiba drive on the left. You can then click erase at the top.Put in the name you want the drive to be (or not. I changed the name later). Make sure it says mac os then click erase.I had one hiccup. All the above didnt work at first. D: It just kept ejecting it. The other reviewers didnt let me down, though. I just RESTARTED my computer and tried again. Worked perfectly. After it erased and formatted it'll ask if you want it to back up your whole computer. I picked ill decide later. I just want to save things to it selectively. And thats that. Started saving stuff right then.Side note: when i first plugged it in my computer recognized it and asked if i wanted to back up my whole computer. I chose decide later initially and thats when i had to go through all the steps above because it wouldn't let me move files into it manually. Now I can! :D hope this helps

I've been needing to upgrade my external backup solution for some time now. So when I saw this drive, I had to order it so I could retire my aging 500 GB external drive (which was also from Toshiba)Pros:-This drive has excellent read/write performance when compared with my old drive (CrystalDiskMark images attached)-This drive was very easy to encrypt with Windows BitLocker, only took a minute to encrypt it.-Came with a new USB type A to MicroUSB type B cable.Cons:-Construction: The outer plastic body feels cheap and is flexible.

This drive works great, is fast, and stores a lot of data. However, the one caveat is making sure you have it plugged in to a powered USB 3.0 hub, not direct to the port on your laptop. If you are going to use more than one USB 3.0 devices, make sure the power is sufficient. I had two external USB drives including this one on a powered USB 3.0 hub, along with my keyboard, headset, and mouse. When trying to transfer files between the two drives, this drive would start getting power failures (a specific ping sound that happens when a drive isn't getting enough power). Turned out that my hub was only a 20W hub. I switched to a 48W hub and no more power issues. So, make sure you have enough power to run this drive if it's not going to running on its own dedicated 3.0 port.
