MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) release price and release date

Apple's redesigned MacBook Pro 16-inch is likely to be launched in the third quarter 2021, judging by the latest buzz from the laptop rumour mill.

A reliable source for information and leaks on Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously claimed that he thinks the new 16-inch model will be launched in the second quarter or third quarter of 2021. It could be a sign of its unveiling during the iPhone 13 event on September 14, but we'd not put our hopes on it.

Recent DigiTimes report also suggested an announcement in Q2 however it's not the most reliable information source in our experience. Kuo has stated that MacBooks with a completely redesigned design that use Apple's own custom ARM processors will appear in the second quarter of 2021. In the last few days, Kuo reasserted the Q3 date for the release of the MacBook Pro 16-inch refresh.

Additionally, renowned tipster Mark Gurman has indicated a launch date of mid-2021, which coincides perfectly with the third quarter of Q3. Theoretically this MacBook Pro's new MacBook Pro could have pitched in July, however without an announcement at WWDC it's more likely we'll be seeing it towards the close of Q3.

It's possible that even if it's Q3 is Apple's intention the launch timeframe may change, especially given the unusual amount of disruption that the tech industry is experiencing lately due to coronavirus affecting logistics and supply chains.

Concerning price In terms of price, we've not yet heard any news about what the suggested price for the new MacBook Pro will be. Current MacBook Pro 16-inch starts at $2,399 (PS2,399, $3,799 AUD) as a reference which is an excellent estimate as to where to determine your expectations.

MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) design

As we've mentioned, the majority of the chatter that comes from the rumor mills suggests that Apple plans a complete revamp for this version, and it is clearly thrilling. According to a report by Bloomberg (by Mark Gurman) states that MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) will be similar to the model it is currently however, it will be a bit different in the appearance.

According to a report from Ming-Chi Kwuo, Apple's redesigned laptop will not have the 'curvy appearance of the present MacBook Pro 16-inch, instead using a flat-edged design' that's similar that of Apple's iPhone 12.

One of the most significant rumored changes, according to both of the sources mentioned above it is that Apple will drop its Touch Bar; at least for some models with 16 inches in any case. The touch strip that is context-sensitive on upper right of keyboard isn't preferred by many who use it, and also can increase the price on this MacBook Pro - so could thus be removed, Kuo believes, to be replaced with conventional function keys. Gurman states his sources that Apple is testing different versions that are a version of MacBook Pro 16-inch. MacBook Pro 16-inch which don't feature an Touch Bar, as some users aren't a fan of it or especially useful.

In the end, there could at the very least be variants that are MacBook Pro 16-inch that do not come with an Touch Bar on board (although this scenario could impact the number of developers who support this feature within their applications as it's not certain that everyone will utilize it).

However some speculation suggests that instead of eliminating the Touch Bar, Apple might go the different route and even enhance it. If Apple will indeed keep it, the Touch Bar - at least on certain versions that include that MacBook Pro 16-inch - it might be able to be used with Force Touch. In reality it is possible that the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) could be the first Apple laptop with the Force Touch enabled the Touch Bar.

This technology permits the recording of various strengths of the bar's presses that could be helpful to activate additional functions or maybe avoiding accidental press on the Touch Bar that could be a source of irritation. The only proof for it can be found in an Apple patent to date and, as we all know that patents are often an avenue of research that doesn't get to a finished product. We'd rather not be in the near future that's why we're not.

In the end an earlier leak that dates back to August 2020 - discussed the possibility of a new 2nd generation Touch Bar, which could be significantly larger than the current strip. However, this does seem to be in stark contrast with the contrary to what some of the latest rumors we've covered previously - from more trustworthy Apple sources - appear to be suggesting. It's not likely that Apple will put more emphasis upon its Touch Bar, in all sincerity, but you may be surprised...

There's a feature in the design that's returning it's The MagSafe charger. It was a very popular charging system in the past. It like the name implies, uses an electrical connection, which means that when the cable gets abruptly pulled away - like when the cable is tripped by someone else - it will easily and safely come out (as as opposed to removing the connected MacBook off the table, as an example).

MagSafe can also provide faster charging and a potential benefit with this switch. However, we hope Apple will keep an option for USB-C chargers as well, if that is the direction that will be the MacBook Pro 16-inch is taking. Also, both Kuo and Gurman are convinced that this new design is on the way.

Mini-LED screens are another major speculation that keeps popping up about this MacBook Pro 16-inch. Kuo previously stated that certain MacBook Pro models arriving in 2021 (and 2022) will benefit from Mini-LED technology (as well as the iPad). In theory, the savings through the use of M1 processors M1 processor (or its successor) will be used to cover the cost of Mini-LED.

Mini-LED could mean a display that has more vibrant colors and greater dynamic range, in addition to better brightness and contrast in general and with a higher power efficiency. This could be an impressive leap in the overall quality of display.

The problem with this solution is that strangely Kuo's most recent research note, there's not a mention of Mini LED at all. The report by Gurman does not mention Mini-LED, either however it does state that Apple is planning to improve the display that comes with its MacBook Pro 16-inch with "brighter, higher-contrast panels".

Kuo has also stated that the forthcoming MacBook Pro 16-inch will have more ports, but Kuo did not elaborate on what these connectors would be. It's an exciting prospect for those looking for positive developments regarding connectivity. (In our evaluation of the latest MacBook Pro 16-inch, one of the biggest drawbacks the latest model was the fact that it has only 4 Thunderbolt ports, but there are no other options for connectivity besides one, such as an SD card slot for instance.).

MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) leaks and reports

Apart from the changes to the design, Apple is intending to change between Intel processors, to their own processors in its MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021).

Ming-Chi's Kuo has confirmed that there will not be Intel processor options available for this newly released MacBook Pro 16-inch, with only Apple chips, and Gurman believes that Apple will opt for the successor to its M1 chip, which will feature'more cores and improved graphics'. The number of cores the successor chip - possibly known as the M1X will include is the subject of various speculation. There's been reports of up to 12 cores or even 20 cores (with four power-efficient 16-core cores).

Consider it with a huge dose of beware, but any increase in the speed offered by Apple's custom silicon is bound bring about some major excitement, considering the achievements in performance Apple has achieved using its M1 it self (there is obviously the possibility that Apple will continue to use its M1).

If this is the case then this MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) may still offer an extra bit of power - specifically, an powerful 10 core Apple Silicon CPU with eight high-performance cores and two energy efficiency cores. Although this particular rumor claims that it'll have up to 64GB of RAM, an earlier report suggests the memory capacity will only be limited at 32GB.

Also, there's a rumor that the brand new Apple M1X integrated graphics will be capable enough to compete with the most recent Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 mobile graphics cards that could be offered in 16-core or 32-core options. It's not just an enormous win for those working in creative fields that require a lot of effort and fields, but it could also open the possibility of using a brand new MacBook Pro as a gaming laptop, bringing another rival along with Nvidia, AMD and Intel.

Another possibility that has been aired through the MacBook Pro grapevine is that the latest model, which is 16 inches in size, is equipped with mobile versions of AMD's forthcoming RX 6700 series of graphics cards. They are expected to launch in March. This is certainly plausible.
