I have come to expect greatness from Western Digital and HGST, which are now one and the same. They have been providing me reliable mechanical storage devices for years. This one, I hope, continues the legacy. It's a touch larger than my other similar capacity portable drives. It does look nicer--it's got that industrial metal look. It does, however, seem to come at a price about $20 more than other WD drives that have the typical plastic enclosure. I am not sure that the metal helps as a heatsink--as mine seems to be cool to the touch, despite it running for over two days as a rotation backup device to my Synology NAS. I only took off a star because of that, but in all--I would still buy it at that price.

It’s nice looking. Fast. But come on...5 HUNDRED gb lost to formatting!? Half a terabyte of a 5tb drive. That’s ridiculous. How companies who make hard drives continue to get away making these false claims baffles me.

I bought this 5TB drive for $119.99 while regular my passport costs $129.99.First impression: very very low vibration and noise compared with a 4TB mt passport from 2018. I cannot say any about reliability but I feel confidence.

I had a brief scare with another drive and quickly purchased this one to back up the other. Plugging it in, I was welcomed with a program called Lacie Setup Assistant. "Wow, that's great!" I thought, knowing I didn't want to research once again how to partition my drive. A few clicks later, it was formatting and said, "Do Not Unplug - Formatting". I waited five hours, and then finally decided that it was hung up. Unplugging it, I found that the computer would not recognize the drive when plugged in anymore. Frustrated, I looked at several websites, and finally found one that told me to go to: disk management, (right click on the drive) and initialize disk, (right click on the unallocated space) and click on "new simple volume"), and assign a letter for a drive path (Windows 10). After several hours of online research, it finally worked and was recognized by the computer. If it wasn't for the fact that I needed it asap, I would have returned it, but the fact that it caused me several hours of inconvenience, along with the other reviews I read of others having problems with their computer not recognizing the drive give me little confidence in this expensive investment that contains my important files. Does the drive work? I think so, but I'm not sure, which is not a good thing for a hard drive.

Bulky yet compact. Large storage space and confusion with formatting it prior to use. Multiple formatting options... if you don’t select the right one forn MAC iOS systems, your computer or laptop will not be able to detect the driver. Website is difficult to navigate. Guess I’ll see how long it lasts with time. No problems so far but thank goodness I had a friend who was able to help me get it up and running!

Seems to work well, and be rugged, but I keep getting an alert that this drive was improperly ejected. Either there's something wrong with the software, or the usb connection is a little loose. Either way, it has caused me to have to restart file transfers almost every time I've transferred a large number of files, and if I hadn't been paying attention and had planned on having it done when I looked back (I transport large files between working locations and sometimes set up a transfer, walk away for the 10-20 minutes, and then come back to eject the drive and take it with me), I could have lost a lot of valuable time.

Just received my new drive, but there are a few problems with the shipment! Drive manufactured date says it was made in November, 2020; so should be brand new! HOWEVER, the box showed signs of having been tampered with! Box says there is a USB3 CABLE ENCLOSED! THE INTERNAL PACKING WAS RIPPED OPEN AND THERE WAS NO USB3 CABLE! NOT A DEAL-BREAKER, BUT NOT VERY IMPRESSIVE, EITHER! THE SHIPMENT ARRIVED A COUPLE OF DAYS LATE! I have to wonder if the delay was associated with the missing part?

I purchased a supposedly USB 3.0 256 GB flash drive that took three hours to transfer 220 GB of data from the computer to it. It wasn't 3.0 speed, obviously, so I returned it.I got this thinking it was an SSD (because, of course, Amazon doesn't filter for that when you type in "SSD hard drive"), but the price was excellent for a 2 TB hard drive, and it's still portable, though somewhat more fragile then an SSD for transporting because it's still a platter drive. In using it, I've found that its speeds are about five times faster than the supposedly 3.0 flash drive using the exact same USB slot, so I'd call it a definite 3.0, though not the top speed the 3.0 spec can achieve, which at the price isn't unexpected.I started a 450 GB transfer of data about 20 minutes ago, and it's already done over 100 GB of that. 450 GB of files ranging from multi-gigabyte to 1 KB in size all transferred in under an hour is quite sufficiently speedy to satisfy my inner geek, even if I know I could have gone higher end for a marginally faster data transfer rate.If you're itching for something that is fast enough, small, relatively easy to transport (see cons below) and has an insane amount of space for data, this is a decent enough drive at a very good price to scratch that itch. I would recommend this to a friend.Pros:- Inexpensive.- Fast enough for most people.- Huge capacity.- Mostly Portable(ish).Cons:- Not SSD speed (it's not an SSD, though, so that's a con against Amazon for displaying it in search results and the seller for not describing it as an HDD in the first place.- Platter drives are more fragile when traveling, but not unreasonably so - just don't ever drop it. You CAN drop SSD's and almost never have to worry about it breaking.

I like to show the size of something so I place it next to a regular deck of playing cards, It's that small! But it holds the memory of bigger size external hard drives, It's simple to use...Just plug into a usb port on your computer ,give it a minute to load up and thats it!! Click your start button...go to computer, Look for your Toshiba icon...click on it...open it up....Drag your music or movies etc right in the box and it's copied onto your new Toshiba Basics 1TB Portable External Hard Drive ...thats it and at 1 Tb...you can load thousands of pictures and music to it and have plenty of space left, I had not 1 problem with it and was set up and ready to go in less than 1 minute.

Nice little disk, very slim profile. Unfortunately it does require above average current input, so it did not work for my project (Connecting it to a WiI USB 2.0 port). It does work great with no issues when connected to a PC though. The golden case is a plus.

Is working as expected so far, less than a full week in useage but it seems to be doing well.I haven’t gone in detail testing read/write speeds or anything, I’m using it to expand Xbox storage capacity and it is working well for that. I’m not sure but i think the game I’ve got on it is loading faster than from the internal drive but I’m not going to do anything crazy testing that observationNote for non-technical people: while the drive IS 320 GB it won’t show 320 available because formatting the drive takes a portion of the space total. That is a fairly standard thing for most to all hard drives.I can’t remenber offhand if that was mentioned on the page so I’d like to toss that in there for y’all’s benefit.

Works well, until you try to eject it, Idk if it's my computer or what, but it keeps saying I have programs running. I've restarted, task managered, and ended all task that would deal with the SSD, watched multiple videos, tried everything, but i'm still not able to safely eject the device. Don't really know how to get in contact with the support. Like I said earlier, it works.. but you many not be able to safely eject, which I'm guessing could ruin everything installed.

I’ve read reviews saying not for Mac but discovered that you need to format it to work with MacOS. When registering the product it will give you instructions to reformat the drive for a Mac Computer. These instructions are for older MacOS. At the top of the instructions it will say for MacOS High Sierra or later click here. After clicking the link the instructions will work perfectly and the HDD will operate as stated. All the formatting is done through DiscUtilities but the instructions tell you what to click on so no worries. Hope this helps someone trying to format the HDD to MacOS. As for performance I just got this drive and have moved one file onto it and it wrote the file very quickly to the drive. Now this is not advising that the drive will last or work for everyone but only my experience of ownership for one day. So far so good and if this HDD fails me I will update the review.UPDATE: June 23, 2020 I have used this now for four months and the hard drive has yet to fail me. I purchased this to store video files for school and for youtube. I do use thumb drives for a backup and found that the Seagate HDD actually writers faster than my SanDisk thumb drives write. My wife was impressed with this 1 TB drive and I ordered her one not long after and it too is still in use and working perfectly. She also uses a Mac. As from my personal experience I would recommend this SeaGate 1 TB to anyone looking to free up space on their Macs or Windows PCs.

Working great work my XBox One

UPDATED REVIEW, 17 JUN 2020:Okay, so originally I rated this drive 2/5 stars because the transfer speed was so slow. However, I bought two of these drives and made a second back up on the second drive. Lo and behold, the second time the backup was much, much faster and only took about 4 1/2 hours to complete the transfer of 766GB of data (Music - 100K+ songs). I'm not really sure why it went nearly 6 times faster the second time as compared to the first time. I would swear that I plugged the drive into a USB 3.0 port (Blue) the first time, too. However, for whatever reason, the first time I backed up the music collection, it took nearly 24 hours to complete, but the second time it took about 4.5 hours. So perhaps my computer is to blame? At this point, I really don't know. I can only say that the second time around was a LOT faster and I was EXTREMELY pleased with the rate of transfer, as it was in line with what I was expecting for a drive that is supposed to support USB 3.0, which has a theoretical max speed of 120Mbps. So averaging 60Mbps is more than reasonable and I saw it get up to 90Mbps for transfer speeds at times, too.So, after the second try, I will rescind my previous rating of 2/5 stars and raise it to 4.5/5 stars. The only reason I'm not giving it the full 5/5 stars is that there is still doubt in my mind as to what happened with the other drive. Hopefully, you will have the same luck as I had with the second drive. For $50, its a great deal no matter what, provided you're only using it for making backups and not a "working" drive that will be constantly accessed throughout the day.I bought this drive expressly to make a copy of my 766GB music collection. I liked the price a lot and that the drive was capable of USB 3.0, which I also have on my Desktop computer. Upon receipt of the drive, I checked the cable to make sure it was also USB 3.0 (it's blue inside, that's how you can tell). Then I plugged it into my Desktop computer on a corresponding USB 3.0 port (Blue). The desktop computer recognized the drive without issue and I then began the process of copying over my 766GB music collection from the Music folder on my computer to a Music folder on the new drive. What I did not anticipate was that it would take nearly 20 hours to complete the transfer and at an average transfer speed of about 10MB/s. As a result, this drive is only good for making backups and nothing more. So if you have the time and are short on $$$, this drive does still have value. But if you are in any kind of hurry, this drive is not the drive you want - not even close. You can see the screen shots I took from beginning to end of the file transfer process to get a better idea of what I'm talking about. The Good- This drive costs just under $50- This drive is very portable and doesn't require a secondary power sourceThe Bad- This drive is extremely slow, despite using USB 3.0, which has a theoretical transfer speed of 120 MB/s. * *NOTE: Theoretical is the keyword here. It would be reasonable to expect a transfer speed of 60 MB/s over a USB 3.0 connection.- This drive should only be used for backups and not a "working drive" I.E. one that you are constantly having to access throughout your work day.Rating: 2/5 stars. I'm giving it 2 stars for portability and price. I'm subtracting 3 stars for how ridiculously slow the write speed is for a drive that is supposed to be USB 3.0 compliant, but transferred my music collection at what appeared to be USB 2.0 speeds.

The drive storage basically fine. Not super loud, ok speed. I have the 16TB set up as RAID 1 for redundant backup. Couple of problems 1) at night (or otherwise idle) if I don't unmount and power down the drive, and my Macbook sleeps, it keeps on getting serial "Disk Not Ejected Properly" errors. Like 10-15 times overnight. 2) The power down switch is way more finicky than it should be - doesnt give positive physical or electronic feedback that is correctly shutting down, and it seems to require precise timing and touch - it says hold for 4 seconds, but when I hold it for slightly longer, it sometimes begins to power up again. So what should be a simple power switch is actually an uncertain hassle to use. I have owned around 30-40 external drives and none have been this much trouble.

On the first go, I rewrote this hard drive to HFS+ for my Mac, and then it got 'stuck' at 99% transferring just a few megabytes of test files. It then froze up when I tried to erase the drive before reformatting. On the second go (with the same hard drive), I rewrote this hard drive to HFS+ for my Mac without erasing first. Now it seems fine. I have had for 3 months and plug it in only once a month to do a backup of my primary backup drive. It does make more noise than I would like, and if it's on your desk surface and you're sensitive like me you will be annoyed by the vibrations it causes while it's writing. I would return it if it was a drive I used daily (due to the noise/vibrations), but since I only use it once a month, it's fine.

Amazon isn’t letting me post the video I took to highlight what I mean, but this hat drive flashes a blue light, a lot. At night, you have to keep it covered, or behind closed doors. If you can’t do that, this probably isn’t the drive for you.

About a month ago my 10-year old external hard drive filled up. Time Machine is supposed to delete the oldest backups and keep running but it did not. Mainly because they are so small, and don’t need a cable, I went with a 1TB 2.0 USB flash drive instead of another external hard drive. The initial Time Machine backup to the new USB flash drive took about six hours which I assumed was an acceptable length of time. Three weeks later Time Machine began encountering intermittent errors while doing backups. Wanting 100% reliable backups, I decided to make a change. Apple Care said they recommend external hard drives because they have internal fans that prevent overheating. USB drives are susceptible to overheating which was the likely cause of my Time Machine errors. The Toshiba drive arrived containing a small file that was easy to delete using Apple’s disc utility. It was already in FAT32 format so my only other task was to give the drive a name. The first Time Machine backup to my new Toshiba USB 3.0 hard drive finished in just under an hour. Subsequent backups take hardly any time at all. My uneducated guess is that even though Apple still uses USB 2.0, Time Machine is able to do it’s backing up function a lot quicker since Toshiba’s drive is 3.0.

This drive is great for those that tend to be on the go a lot. I used this drive to back up all of my files from my desktop to bring with me when I'm out for use on my laptop. I also have used this drive to install and run games (to preserve storage space on my laptop's internal SSD) and they run just as good as on any other drive. The USB C connectivity is also very convenient to access and transfer files to/from an Android phone or Tablet, which I really appreciate. On top of that, its small size makes it easily pocketable which only adds to why I enjoy this particular drive. Definitely recommend this drive to anyone seeking a drive with plenty of capacity and some of the best portability I've seen in a drive!

The harddrive seems to work fine but if you're transferring large sets of data from another drive be prepared to wait a while. The fastest write speed I saw was 23 MB/s. Which translated to it taking an entire day (including overnight) to copy my previous 1TB back up to this drive. Other than the abysmal slow write times, it seems to work pretty well. If you want a lot of space at a low price, this is the way to go but if you want a bit more speed/performance I'd recommend a different brand.

It took me about a week to understand its functionality. I own a Windows 10 64-bit PC and a 2015 MacBook Pro; I purposely bought a Mac-based hard drive it to extract my documents, movies and files from my PC to the hard drive for Mac. compatability. If you share the same agenda please listen closely. This hard drive can be formatted in numerous standards: exFat, HFS+, HFS+ with encryption, NTFS and much more. If you intend to use the hard drive with PC and Mac interchangeably you must set it to HFS+ and NOT HFS w/encryption. In order to change the format, navigate to Disk Utility > [select the hard drive media] > Partition. You will see a drop down list of formats available; select HFS+ to be readable for Mac and PC. This action must be performed first before syncing any files ; partitioning requires the hard drive to be reseted and all files will be erased. Aside from this advice, I recommend this sleek and attractive looking hard drive.

Seagate has a few of these 8TB External Hub Drives segmented to various markets. Just wanted to let everyone know this works perfectly with the XBOX ONE X. Literally plug and play. Your XBOX will ask you if you want to use this as a media drive or format as a game drive. Once formatted you'll have about ~7.2TB available for game storage. (After over-provision: This is normal for ALL drives) So if you're looking for a matching black hub drive this will work wonders for you. The only thing missing is the fancy Xbox branding that the white

I bought this Canvio Advance Hard Drive mainly for the Toshiba name, but also I wanted the 'back-up' capabilities the 'Advanced' one has over the Basic Model. However, it is not compatible with my Vista OS. Unfortunately, this important info is only stated on the side of the box so I did not know until I received the order. It shows, "compatible with Win 10, Win 8.1, and Win 7, and also MAC. I checked out the Canvio BASIC Hard Drive compatibility from another retailers website, and it shows to be compatible with Win 8, Win 7, Win Vista, and Win XP. Also with MAC.There were no problems making an exchange for the BASIC model with Amazon. They are a 5 Star in customer service. I just wish the OS compatibility was given in more detail on the Amazon site.

I bought this 2TB external hard drive for my PS4. My 500 GB PS4 was out of available space, and this device worked perfectly! When I connected the USB, the system asked if wanted to format the drive for use on the PS4. I clicked YES, and it was ready to use. I was able to immediately start moving saved data from the PS4 to the external hard drive. Now, I have all the free space I need. The Playstation branded external hard drive was priced at nearly $30 more, so it would have been a waste of money. This Toshiba drive does exactly what I needed it to do, and I saved money at the same time. If you're looking for extra storage space for your PS4, look no further.

I bought the 2TB version.TL;DR: don't expect this drive to be able to copy a full 64gb SD card at full speed, unless it's sitting on a heatsink in front of a fan.I'm seeing ~130MB/s for large file read, and ~60MB/s for large file writes, but after 10-20GB of writes, the case heats up, and I/O speeds drop to under 1MB/s, presumably due to internal heat and poor thermal management firmware. This is in a fairly cold room, btw: ambient is ~65F.I had to put the drive in front of a fan, and pause writes every minute, for a minute, before I saw stable throughput speeds from the drive.I'm using f3write to verify the drive before I trust it with my data. It eventually passed read/write tests for all 2TB.
