As previously mentioned, WhatsApp will no longer be compatible with different phone kinds. Therefore, as of January 1, users of around 49 phone models introduced more than a decade ago will no longer be able to transmit messages and other content via WhatsApp. Those using handsets running Android versions prior to 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and iOS 12.1 will no longer be able to use WhatsApp.

BFMTV.com quotes WhatsApp as saying, “In order to stay up with the newest technological breakthroughs, we discontinue support for outdated operating systems on a regular basis in order to allocate our resources to supporting newer platforms.”

Among the targeted smartphones are the 2012 and 2013-released iPhone 5 and 5c, the Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3 mini, and the HTC Desire 500.

However, the majority of customers already employ Android 4.1. According to a February 2021 Android census, just 0.2% of devices utilize a later version. iOS, in contrast, is at version 16.2

However, WhatsApp users with these sorts of phones still have a few options available to them. On some devices, it is possible to update to the next version of the operating system. The update requires at least Android 4.1 and iOS 12, and it is performed in the settings menu.

On October 24, 2022, WhatsApp released its final operating system upgrade, and support for iOS 10 and 11 was withdrawn.
